Samsung's PCIe 5.0 SSD Costs The Same As PCIe 4.0 Now. Buy The Faster One.

Published by James Majestine on July 13, 20263 min read

Samsung's 9100 PRO Gen 5.0 SSDs dropped in price. The 1TB model is now $249 on Amazon. That's the same price as the older 990 PRO Gen 4.0 SSD at $239. The 2TB 9100 PRO is $399, only $10 more than the 2TB 990 PRO at $389.

Three months ago the 9100 PRO 1TB was $320. The 2TB was $499. There's no reason to buy the older 990 PRO anymore.

Why This Matters

Usually PCIe 5.0 drives cost significantly more than PCIe 4.0 drives. The performance difference doesn't matter for most people, so the cheaper option made sense. But when they're the same price, the math is simple. Get the faster drive.

The 9100 PRO reads at up to 14,700 MB/s. The 990 PRO tops out around 7,000 MB/s. In real-world use on a gaming PC or workstation, you probably won't notice the difference. But if you're moving large files, doing video editing, or working with big datasets, the extra speed actually helps.

7,000

9100 PRO (Gen 5)

14,700

For the same money, there's no reason to choose the older drive.

Other Options

Both drives come with optional heatsinks. If you don't need the heatsink, the version without it is cheaper and takes up less space in your computer. Unless you're already running hot, skip the heatsink and save money.

Prices Change Fast

SSD prices are all over the place right now. Memory costs are volatile. But right now, at these prices, the 9100 PRO is a better choice than the 990 PRO. That could change next week if prices shift again. But today, take the deal.
